Motor Vehicles:

Q. Do I need my insurance to renew a vehicle?

A. Yes you have to provide us with a copy of your pink card or you can fill in the form on the back of your renewal notice. If you do not know the information or do not have a pink card we can contact your insurance company by phone while you are at our desk.

Q. Do I need authorization to do something for my spouse?

A. Yes you will require authorization if there are any changes being made to the file, if it is just a clean renewal you won't require it.

Q. Do I need authorization when both names appear on the Bill of Sale?

A. Yes, because we need approval from both owners to register the vehicle in a specific name(s).

Q. Do I need an original Bill of Sale?

A. No.

Q. What do I need to register my new vehicle?

A. Bill of Sale/Lease agreement, valid insurance and a NVIS card if the vehicle is brand new.

Q. How do I transfer plates from another province?

A. You will require the following in the order they are listed in: Inspection request form, out of province inspection by a certified mechanic, valid insurance, previous proof of ownership.

Q. How long do I have to exchange my plates & licence when I move from another province to Alberta?

Q. Is it worth it for me to cancel my plate and registration?

A. It depends on how much time is left on the registration. Talk to a registry office to find out how much your refund will be and how much it costs to have it done.

Q. What do I need to remove a lease from a registration?

A. Bill of sale from a dealership or a letter of release from the leasing company.

Q. What is a NVIS and why do I need the original?

A. A NVIS is a New Vehicle Information Statement that is designed by the manufacturer. We require the original because it has to be filled out by the dealer and sent to the manufacturer.

Q. Can I use the plate that was on the car when I bought it?

A. No.

Q. I want to buy a car can you tell me if there is a lien on it or if it has been written off?

A. Yes, your can run a lien check and a Vehicle Information Report.

Q. If I register a vehicle will it tell me if there is a lien on it?

A. No.

Driver's Licences:

Q. When I renew my license, do I get my photo right away?

A. No, you will receive an interim licence without a photo that day and your licence card with the photo will be mailed to you in 10 - 14 business days.

Q. Do I have to take a new photo today?

A. Yes if you currently have an old licence or if you are renewing your existing licence.  However if you have lost your current licence it is mandatory to have a new photo taken.  Otherwise you can use the photo on the system if you wish.

Q. What do I need to write my learners?

A. Parent with you if you are under 18 and 2 pieces of ID listed below in the next question.

Q. What can be used as a second piece of I.D.?

A. Your are required to produce any two of the following: Original SIN card, marriage certificate, immigration documents (expiry date must be more than three months), passport, major credit card, birth certificate, WIN card, FAC card, bank card (must have your name on the front), and parent present with their Driver's Licence.

Q. Why do I need more ID if you already have my photo on the system?

A. The photo on the system is only considered one piece of ID, you still have to present two additional pieces.

Q. Why do I need to wait one year before I can take a road test?

A. New rules implemented by the government under the Graduated Driver Licencing program.

Q. Do I really need to change my address on my licence?

A. It is illegal to have the wrong address on your licence and you will be liable for a fine if caught by the police.

Vital Statistics:

Q. Who can order a vital statistics document?

A. Anyone who's name appears on the certificate, person with written authority, mother or father (birth certificate), guardian, trustee, power of attorney and legal representative.

Q. What type of ID do I need to order my Birth Certificate/Marriage Certificate?

A. Driver's Licence, Passport, Immigration documents.

Q. How do I get a Marriage License?

A. Both parties must be present with individual ID.  If either party have been married before, you will be required to produce a final Divorce certificate/decree.  You must be getting married in the province of Alberta within 90 days from the date you receive the licence. Also if you are under 18 and not self-supporting we will require parental consent in person or if you are self-supporting you must provide proof of that.

Q. Why can't I order my spouse's Birth Certificate?

A. You can order a vital statistics document for your spouse if you have written consent from them to do so.

Q. What is the difference in the three sizes of Birth Certificates?

A. The framing size has more information than the wallet size, it contains the parents name and province of birth. The certified photographic print is a copy of the registration that was filled out by the mother in the hospital.

Q. Why can't I laminate my Birth Certificate?

A. It becomes an illegal document if you laminate it. This rule was implemented by the government to avoid altering a government document.

Q. Why do I need the original divorce decree/certificate to obtain a marriage licence?

A. We can accept a faxed copy, if it is directly faxed from the courthouse to our office. Otherwise we will require the original.

Q. Why is a divorce judgment not acceptable?

A. Because it doesn't state that the divorce is final.

Q. Why is a photocopy of my Birth Certificate not valid ID?

A. Security reasons, it has the possibility of being altered.

Q. Why am I required to have my fingerprints taken in order to do a legal name change?

A. Security reasons.

Q. Do we have to give blood to get a marriage licence?

A. No.

Q. How long does it take to receive my certificate?

A. By mail it takes 6-10 business days, if you have it couriered to our office it takes 2 business days.

Q. What will appear on my Birth Certificate once I've done a legal name change?

A. Your new name.

Q. How do I register a Lien?

A. The forms can be picked up at a registry office or they can be downloaded from the gov't web site. Then The Medicine Hat Licence Centre can help you with the registrations.

Q. How many days do I have to register a Garage Keeper's Lien?

A. 21 days from date of release.

Q. What can I register a lien on?

A. Any serial numbered goods, general collateral ie. cattle, office furniture, etc.)

Q. Can I renew a lien once it has expired?

A. No, you have to register a new one.

Q. Who can register a lien?

A. Anyone.

Q. What information is required to order a lien search?

A. Vehicle Identification number, Debtor's name, business name or a registration number.

Land Titles:

Q. Can I obtain a copy of my land title, as I have just paid off my mortgage?

A. Yes, we just need the legal description of your land.

Q. My spouse passed away, how do I remove a name from our Land Title?

A. You will have to contact land titles directly, The Medicine Hat Licence Centre can help you with the number.

Q. What information do I need to order a land title?

A. Plan, Block, Lot or legal land description with TWP, Range Road, Meridian, and section.

Q. I need a land title search and the land is located on an Indian reservation. Can you get me the information?

A. No, you have to go through the municipality.

Q. Can you obtain mortgage documents?

A. Yes.

Q. Can I find out how who has mineral rights on a piece of land?

A. Yes.

Q. Can you tell me who owned the property before me?

A. Yes, by running a historical title, but you will need a current title number.

Corporate Registries

Q. Why do I need ID to file an annual return?

A. To prove that your are an authorized representative of the company.

Q. Why don't I have rights to my name when I have a partnership or sole proprietorship?

A. You only get rights to a name when you incorporate under that name.

Q. I have been struck, what steps do I need to take to make my company active again?

A. Contact The Medicine Hat Licence Centre to file Articles of Revival and any outstanding Annual Returns.

Q. I have a numbered company, why do I need to register a trade name to do an operating as?

A. Whichever name your are carrying on business under must be registered with Alberta Registries.

Q. How does this work?

Q. What does it cost?

A. One time initiation fee of $335.00 + $40.00 for each employee that you sign up.

Q. Who is eligible?

A. Anyone with a limited company and at least one employee

Q. Do I have to be a "Limited" company to have this health care coverage?

A. Yes.

Q. Why are there no premiums?

A. Because it is not an insurance plan, it is a PRIVATE SPENDING PLAN.

Q. Am I Paying for the service twice?

A. No, you pay first and then your company pays olympia trust so you can get your refund.

Q. I am the sole employee, am I a eligible?

A. Yes your are eligible as long as you have one employee and that can be yourself.
